Hocking B. Preliminary report: Symptoms associated with mobile phone use. Occupational Medicine. 1998: 48(6): p. 357-360. Hocking's published findings related to the symptoms associated with the analog and digital cellular phones described the symptoms to include discomfort, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, fatigue, headache, burning skin sensations (a sensation of warmth near the ear) and tingling and tightness of the skin near the phone. This study was corroborated by Mild et al 1998.

Mild, K.H., Oftedal G, Sandstrom M., Wilen J, Tynes T, Haugsdal B, Hauger E. Comparison of symptoms by users of analogue and digital mobile phones – A Swedish-Noorwegian epidemiological study. National Institute for Working Life, Umea, Sweeden, 1998: p. 84. Mild et al examined 11, 000 mobile phone users and corroborated all of the symptoms described by Hocking and stated that fatigue, headaches and burning sensations are more frequent symptoms of people who make longer phone calls.

Khurana, V. G., 1998, Mobile phones and brain tumours – A public health concern http://www.brain-surgery.us/mobph.pdf. Dr Khurana is a leading Australian Neurosurgeon who conducted 14 months of research into this topic. His report concludes "there is a growing body of statistically significant evidence for the relationship between the overall length of use of a mobile phone and the delayed occurrence of a brain tumour on the same side of the head as the ‘preferred side' for mobile phone use. The elevated risk (increased odds) appears to be in the order of 2 – 4 fold".

Brain cancers and tumours

New York based Brain Researcher

"There is no question Electo-Magnetic Fields (EMFs) have a major effect on neurological functioning. They slow our brain waves and affect our long-term mental clarity. We should minimize exposures as much as possible to optimize neurotransmitter levels and prevent deterioration of health."

Eric Braverman, MD Brain researcher, author of The Edge Effect and Director of Path Medical in New York City and The PATH Foundation. Expert in the brain's global impact on illness and health.

Leading Australian Brain Cancer Surgeon (Dr Teo)

"we know radiation causes cancer, but it takes about 10 years to develop …it becomes really, really compelling the link, personally, I think there probably is [a link between mobile phone use and brain cancer]

Dr Teo, Leading Brain Cancer Surgeon (interview with Andrew Denton (Sept 2008).

Pregnancy and childhood behavioural problems

Women who use mobile phones when pregnant are more likely to give birth to children with behavioural problems, according to authoritative research. http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/warning-using-a-mobile-phone-while-pregnant-can-seriously-damage-your-baby-830352.html

Fertility

A recent study involving 361 men attending an infertility clinic suggested that use of cell phones adversely affect the quality of semen by decreasing the sperm counts, motility, viability and morphology, which might contribute to male infertility.

Other Concerns by Medical and Scientific Researchers

USA Clinical Professor of Medicine

"Claims that cell phones pose no health hazards are supported solely by Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) limits safety standards written by the telecommunication industry decades ago based on studies they funded. These have made the erroneous assumption that the only harm that could come from cell phone radiofrequency emissions would be from a thermal or heating action, since such non thermal fields can have no biological effects. The late Dr. Ross Adey disproved this three decades ago by demonstrating that very similar radiofrequency fields with certain carrier and modulation frequencies that had insufficient energy to produce any heating could cause the release of calcium ions from cells. Since then, numerous research reports have confirmed that non thermal fields from cell phones, tower transmitters, power lines, and other man made sources can significantly affect various tissues and physiologic functions."

Director, American Academy of Environmental Medicine

"Sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation is the emerging health problem of the 21st century. It is imperative health practitioners, governments, schools and parents learn more about it. The human health stakes are significant."

William Rea, MD, Founder & Director of the Environmental Health Center, Dallas Past President, American Academy of Environmental Medicine

Magda Havas, PhD Associate Professor

"Radio frequency radiation and other forms of electromagnetic pollution are harmful at orders of magnitude well below existing guidelines. Science is one of the tools society uses to decide health policy. In the case of telecommunications equipment, such as cell phones, wireless networks, cell phone antennas, PDAs, and portable phones, the science is being ignored. Current guidelines urgently need to be re-examined by government and reduced to relect the state of the science. There is an emerging public health crisis at hand and time is of the essence."

Magda Havas, PhD, Associate Professor, Environment & Resource Studies, Trent University, Canada Expert in radiofrequency radiation, electromagnetic fields, dirty electricity and ground current.

David Carpenter, MD Professor

"Electromagnetic fields are packets of energy that does not have any mass, and visible light is what we know best. X-rays are also electromagnetic fields, but they are more energetic than visible light. Our concern is for those electromagnetic fields that are less energetic than visible light, including those that are associated with electricity and those used for communications and in microwave ovens. The fields associated with electricity are commonly called "extremely low frequency" fields (ELF), while those used in communication and microwave ovens are called "radiofrequency" (RF) fields. Studies of people have shown that both ELF and RF exposures result in an increased risk of cancer, and that this occurs at intensities that are too low to cause tissue heating. Unfortunately, all of our exposure standards are based on the false assumption that there are no hazardous effects at intensities that do not cause tissue heating. Based on the existing science, many public health experts believe it is possible we will face an epidemic of cancers in the future resulting from uncontrolled use of cell phones and increased population exposure to Wi-Fi and other wireless devices. Thus it is important that all of us, and especially children, restrict our use of cell phones, limit exposure to background levels of Wi-Fi, and that government and industry discover ways in which to allow use of wireless devices without such elevated risk of serious disease. We need to educate decision-makers that ‘business as usual' is unacceptable. The importance of this public health issue can not be underestimated."
